The 9th International Conference on Cycad Biology was held in Shenzhen, China

The 9th International Conference on Cycad Biology was held in Shenzhen, China, during Dec. 1-7, 2011. The wild field trip was arramged during Dec. 7-13, 2011.

The conference brought together over 110 delegates from 15 different countries and regions, A total of 54 talks and 22 posters were presented.

The conference was organized by Fairylake Botanical Garden, the Cycad Society of China, the IUCN/SSC Cycad Specialist Group, the Forestry Department of Guangxi province, the New York Botanical Garden and Montgomery Botanical Center, and co-organized by Shenzhen Urban Management Bureau, Department of National Reserves & Wildlife Conservation, the National Forestry Bureau, and the China Wild Plant Conservation Association.

Opening ceremony

At 9 am on Dec. 2, 2011, the opening ceremony was held at the Multifunctional Hall in the Comprehensive Exhibition Hall of Shenzhen International Flower and Garden Expo Park. The director of Department of Wildlife Conservation and Nature Reserve Management of State Forestry Adiministration, China, Mr. Xiwu Zhang, the general secretary of Shenzhen Municipal Government Mr. Ping Li, the chair of IUCN-SSC Cycad Specialists Group Dr. John Donald, the chair of scientific committee of cycad 2011 Dr. Dennis Stevenson attended and addressed the opening ceremony. The director of Shenzhen Urban Management Bureau Jinhang Meng, the deputy director of Shenzhen urban management bureau Jianchun Song, the director of department of wildlife conservation of Guangxi Forestry Bureau Biyan Feng, the deputy director of Guangdong Forestry Bureau Fan Meng, the director of Montgomery Botanical Center Patrick Griffith attended. The director of Fairylake Botanical Garden Weihua Zhu presided over the opening ceremony.

Oral presentations & posters

A total of 54 talks and 22 posters were presented, including 4 plenary talks. Talks and posters were presented in eight main study areas: Genetics and Genomics, Conservation, Taxonomy and Phylogeny, Ecology, Horticulture, Toxicology, Economic Botany, and Information Management.

Plenary talk 3: Phylogeography and conservation genetics of the Caribbean Zamia clade: an integrated systematic approach with SSRs and single copy nuclear genes, presented by Alan W. Meerow.

Plenary talk 4: An overview of cycad conservation based on the 2010 Global Cycad Assessment and its implications for the IUCN/SSC Cycad Action Plan, presented by John Donaldson

CSG workshop

Central to the conference was the IUCN Cycad Specialist Group, which met to update information on cycads on the Red List for 2011 with new data gained from recent research.

Wild field trip

There 19 delegates including 16 foreign cycad experts took part in the wild field trip to Guangxi province during the week of Dec. 7-13, 2011. We explored the Cycas bifida wild habitat in Chongzuo city, Cycas miquelii wild habitat in Longzhou County, Cycas debaoensis wild habitat in Fuping village, Cycas ferruginea wild habitat in Tiandong county, Cycas shiwandashanica wild habitat in Fangcheng County. We also visited re-introduction site of Cycas debaoensis in Huanglianshan Provincial Nature Reserve and Guangxi Medicinal herb Botanical Garden in Nanning city.

The conference was an immense success. It allowed cycad biologists from around the world to present new scientific discoveries and discuss critical future directions. Being able to hear about three years of cycad research being conducted around the world at one conference was spectacular. It is great to see the leaps and bounds being taken by cycad biologists internationally.
