Scientific Research

Fairylake Botanical Garden is a young botanical garden. Same as counterparts, the main scientific research activities by Fairylake Botanical Garden cover investigation, collection and analysis of all kinds of plants. With years’ efforts, Fairylake Botanical Garden has set up 17 special gardens at various scales, including the outstanding gardens like Cycadaceae Germplasm Resource Conservation Center, Magnoliids Garden, Rare Tree Garden, Shade Plant Zone, Butterfly & Orchid Valley, and Desert Plant Zone; Fairylake Botanical Garden published several books including China Cycadaceae, Shenzhen Garden Plants, Shenzhen Ancient Trees and Famous Trees.

Fairylake Botanical Garden has become one of the botany scientific research bases of Shenzhen, and permanently provides theoretic and technical support in plant science for construction and development of Shenzhen. The current scientific research direction of this garden covers various fields like plant reproduction biology, systematical and evolutional botany, urban ecology, plant genomics (Prokaryotic genome, chloroplast genome, transcriptomics). The related research topics include “Protection and application of rare and endangered plants in urban green space system”, “Investigation and evaluation on landscape tree species of Shenzhen”, and “Classification of green space types of urban green space system and its evaluation on ecological benefit”. The scientific research activities carried out by Fairylake Botanical Garden have played an important role in the development of Shenzhen’s garden industry.

Fairylake Botanical Garden has set up plant biochemistry and molecular biology lab, plant anatomy lab, microscope lab, plant protection lab, plant tissue culture lab, fern reproduction lab, plant physiology lab, plant and environment lab and seed physiology lab. The labs made an investment of over RMB 5 million to purchase lab instruments. Fairylake Botanical Garden has constructed a plant specimen museum keeping over 70,000 specimens, and a plant library with 12,000 volumes. It is currently a scientific research institution with perfect plant research equipment and powerful scientific team in Shenzhen.

Fairylake Botanical Garden has developed into an important base for national plant science research. In 2009, Fairylake Botanical Garden formally joined in the team of Chinese Academy of Science becoming a botanical garden constructed jointly by Chinese Academy of Science and Shenzhen Municipal Government. In the same year, Systematical and Evolutional Botany National Key Lab of Chinese Academy of Science, Fairylake Botanical Garden and Shenzhen Huada Genetics Academy signed an agreement on construction of “Plant gene and biological information key lab”. Fairylake Botanical Garden together with Institute of Botany Chinese Academy of Science presided and edited Higher Plants of China, Journal of Systematic and Evolution. The related experts from our garden took part in editing of part of chapters in Flora of China.
