Macau Bryophytes Diversity Survey Results Exhibition Opens

Macau Bryophytes Diversity Survey Results Exhibition, which was co-organized by IACM and Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, was opened in Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, Macau on December 3, 2008. Divided into three parts of Public Science, Macau and China & Conservation, the Exhibition introduced to visitors the basic knowledge of bryophytes and related survey results via a lot of text, pictures, models, objects, videos, etc. Some keynote speeches were also delivered to echo the exhibition.

The member of IACM Management Committee Mrs. Guan Shimin, Chairman Representative of IACM Advisory Committee Mr. Xian Zhiyao and Director of Fairy Lake Botanical Garden PhD. Li Yong presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mrs. Guan said in her speech that with important ecological function, bryophytes play a significant role in maintaining the water-soil balance and reducing the greenhouse effect. For the purpose of enabling citizens to know more about bryophytes, starting from October 2006, IACM cooperated with Fairy Lake Botanical Garden to carry out the Macau Bryophytes Diversity Survey to have an in-depth and comprehensive investigation on bryophytes in Macau. Over 450 specimens were collected and more than 4000 pictures were taken, with nearly 100 types of bryophytes identified. The research results filled up the gap of related research, but also provided basic information to Macau bryophytes’ conservation and utilization. PhD. Li Yong indicated that the Exhibition summarizes the survey results, and more importantly, it could spread related knowledge to the public, allowing them to know about diversity and significance of bryophytes. Bryophytes played a vital part in the water balance, carbon and nitrogen metabolism and pollution monitoring in the global ecosystem. The survey research will come to an end by the end of next year, and three monographs will be published. The Exhibition will run till December 10.
