2008 China Pteridophyte Symposium Opens

The 2008 China Pteridophyte Symposium, organized by Fern Committee of China Flower Association and sponsored by Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, was held in Shenzhen from December 17 to 19 2008. On the morning of December 17, Deputy President of Department for Wildlife and Forest Plants Protection of the National Forestry Administration Jia Jiansheng, Deputy Inspector of Shenzhen Urban Management Bureau Wang Yanbing, President of Fern Committee of China Flower Association Zhang Xianchun, Prof. Harald Schneider with British Natural History Museum and PhD. Masahiro Kato with National Museum of Nature and Science of Japan were present at the opening ceremony and made a speech, respectively. Director of Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden Li Yong chaired the opening ceremony. On behalf of Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, Deputy Director Liu Xingrao accepted cyathea seeding presented by Institute of Botany, The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Isoëtes plant gifted by Harbin Normal University.

After the opening ceremony, Mr. Jia Jiansheng gave a speech on China’s biodiversity conservation campaign and answered questions from attendees. PhD. Harald Schneider, PhD. Masahiro Kato and Mr. Zhang Xianchun made respective speeches on the fern’s evolution and classification and China’s fern research. There will be 46 experts to give academic reports at the Symposium later on, with the topics involving the fern systematic and evolutionary botany, flora and distribution, plant physiology and molecular biology, etc.

The Symposium fully demonstrates the outstanding achievements that Chinese fern workers have made in many fields such as scientific research, teaching, species conservation and resource development & utilization. It strengthens the exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign fern research institutions, and makes great contributions to promoting China’s fern industrial development and the investigation, collection, conservation, research and sustainable utilization of China’s fern resources.
